He articled at Booth Dennehy LLP from 2010 - June 2011, at which point he was called to the Bar and has worked as an Associate at the firm since. He works primarily in the fields of Civil collections including Small Claims, and Child and Family Services including applications for private guardianship.

He lists volunteer work with Legal Aid, summer courses between second and third year in Indigenous Law at the University of Victoria, and representing Robson Hall at the 2010 Kawaskimhon Aboriginal law moot competition in Ottawa as his best learning experiences in law school.

James commutes to work 12 months a year by bicycle, and in his spare time he enjoys mountain biking, snowboarding, surfing (inasmuch as they are possible in Manitoba), hockey, camping, travelling, reading, and generally anything that gets him outside, particularly with his young family.

James is a member of the Manitoba Branch of the Canadian Bar Association.
